Peanut Butter Bread Is Banana Bread’s Easier, One-Bowl Cousin. This particular recipe comes from a 1932 Canadian cookbook titled Five Roses: A Guide to Good Cooking. Five Roses is a flour company with a rich history that stretches back to 1888. Its 1932 cookbook was a staple in kitchens across Canada. The book was published at the height of the Great Depression and contains recipes for home cooks who were short on many baking ingredients.

As it belongs to the quick bread family, this peanut butter bread does not require yeast. What you will need is all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, and peanut butter. Peanut butter actually replaces the eggs and butter (both of which were hard to come by during the Great Depression).

Ingredients:

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour

  2. 1/4 cups sugar

  3. 4 teaspoons baking powder

  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  5. 1 1/3 cups milk

  6. 1/2 cup peanut butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.

  2. Grease a loaf pan with butter or baking spray.

  3. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.

  4. Mix in the milk, then the peanut butter.

  5. Scrape into greased loaf pan and bake for one hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Yields 8 servings.

If you're looking for a slightly nuttier flavor, I recommend using 1 1/2 cups peanut butter.
